ChatGPT Is NOT Private! Open AI CEO Sam Altman spilled the secrets

Have you ever typed something personal into ChatGPT, maybe a story, a secret, or even a confession, thinking it was just between you and the AI?

Well, here’s the truth…

ChatGPT is NOT as private as you think.

I didn’t say that; the message came from the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman

Let’s break it down

UNDERSTANDING OF THE AI

ChatGPT is an AI model created by OpenAI. It’s designed to help you write, research, and plan events. But, rather than using it as an assistant, interestingly, a lot of individuals are using it more like a digital therapist than a productivity tool.

These days, more and more people are opening up to ChatGPT—sharing their secrets, fears, and problems—thinking it’s a private space. But you might be surprised to learn: it’s not truly confidential.

On July 23, In a YouTube podcast named “This Past Weekend,” hosted by Theo Von, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that ChatGPT users have no confidentiality rights on their personal or emotional data shared by them.

He said, “People talk about the most personal sh*t in their lives to ChatGPT. People use it - young people, especially, like to use it as a therapist, a life coach; having these relationship problems, and what should I do?"

He added When you talk to doctors and lawyers about your problems, there is legal privilege for it, like doctor-patient confidentiality, and we haven’t figured that out yet for when you talk to ChatGPT.”

The video grabbed viewers' interest and made everyone concerned about their privacy on the AI tool.

The question is, “IS YOUR DATA BEING SAVED?

According to OpenAI’s own privacy policy, your chats can be used to improve the system. That means the data you share could be stored and used to train AI models.

Even worse, if you’re not using private mode, human reviewers might look at your conversations to check for accuracy or safety.

That means your chat isn’t just between you and the AI… there might be a real person on the other side reviewing it.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER TYPE

"Here’s what you should NEVER type into ChatGPT:

  • Your real name

  • Any confidential passwords or login details

  • Financial, Banking, or identity information

  • Deep personal confessions you wouldn’t want anyone to know because once it’s out, it may be saved — permanently in digital data."

How can you protect yourself?

PRIVATE MODE & SAFER USAGE

Want more privacy? Use the ‘Private Mode’ by turning off ‘Chat History & Training’ in your settings. This stops your chats from being used to train the AI, but remember — it’s still not 100% secure.

No AI platform is.

There is no such thing as privacy on the internet.

AI supports us in various ways, but we must not overlook the importance of privacy.

So the next time you open ChatGPT, remember: treat it like a public space, not a diary.

Be smart. Stay safe.
And always read the fine print.
