What is a master recording right?
"Master recording rights" are known as the ownership of the original sound recording of a musical work.
The owner of the master recording controls everything related to the musical work, from reproducing and distributing to publicly performing it. Artists get the royalties, but they have no control over how and by whom the music will be used.
How it all started
Swift started her music career with the music label Big Machine Label Group. The label purchased the master rights to her first six albums. The firm “Big Machine, sold the master rights to Shamrock Capitol in 2020.
Swift was uneasy and working on to buy back her albums right since Scooter Braun, the manager and executive of Big Machine, bought them in 2019 when he acquired Big Machine Label Group.
In the urge to acquire the rights, Swift has re-released her 4 albums, calling them Taylor’s Version. Between 2021 and 2023, she rerecorded Fearless of 2008, Red of 2012, Speak Now of 2010 and 1989 of 2014. But put the remaining on hold.
On 30th May, Taylor Swift posted 4 pictures of her with her albums on X (Twitter) with the caption “You belong to me.”
