Udaipur - "The City of Lakes" or "The Venice of the East"


Indian state Rajasthan is widely famous for its royal palaces, rich culture, and colourful attires, and most of the credit goes to Udaipur. It is often called "The City of Lakes" or "The Venice of the  East". It is situated approximately 663 km away from Delhi.

History of Udaipur

Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia clan, Udaipur was originally established as the capital of the Mewar Kingdom. The city continued as the seat of Mewar’s rulers until 1818, when it became a princely state under British rule, following India’s independence in 1947, Udaipur became part of the state of Rajasthan.

Udaipur is most famous for its picturesque lakes, which add to the city’s ethereal beauty. Many of these lakes were initially constructed to fulfill water shortages in dry areas, but over time, they have become some of the city's most iconic attractions. History of The City of Lake 

The city, full of exquisite lakes and palaces, was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia clan of Rajput in 1559 and named after him. It remained the capital of the Kingdom of Mewar until 1818, when it became a British princely state. After India gained its independence in 1947, it became part of the Rajasthan state.

The Attractions

Udaipur holds fame for its majestic hotels and mesmerizing views of the seven lakes that surround the entire city.  It is believed some of them were built to fulfil the water shortage in the area, and with the development of the city, the need became the beauty of the town, as a result, Lakes became the main tourist attraction. Here are some of them.

Lake Pichola

Oldest and one of the most famous lakes in Udaipur is Lake Pichola. Though it is an artificial lake, it created a magnificent aura like any natural lake in the area. This is built in the 14th century and has mesmerising views, decorated with the City Palace and the Jag Mandir on its banks. You enjoy serene boat rides on the lake in a peaceful environment.


Fateh Sagar Lake


Another piece of beautiful architecture built in the 17th century is Fateh Sagar Lake, located to the north of Lake Pichola. This lake consists of three islands, one of which is the Nehru Garden. You can also enjoy boat rides here, and please yourself with views of the sunset on the Hills.


Rana Kumbha Lake


Rana Kumbhal Lake embraces the famous Kumbhalgarh Fort, although the lake is lesser-known, its beauty is certainly a competition to others. This lake was created by Maharana Kumbha, the Rajpur king of Mewar. He also built Kumbhalgar Fort and Vijaya Stambha.


Udai Sagar Lake


Less crowded yet well known among the other Lakes in Udaipur. Udai Sagar Lake is located to the southeast of Udaipur, built by the founder himself of Udaipur, Maharana Udai Singh II. This lake has also a lot to offer, including boat rides, peaceful views, and historical stories.


Swaroop Sagar Lake


A small in size yet appealing Swaroop Sagar Lake runs in the heart of Udaipur, connecting Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake. This lake also offers a beautiful view of City Palace and Aravali Hills.
